What is NTI?
NTI is an acronym for Nociception Trigeminal Inhibition; which basically means blocking pain from the nerves in the jaw.
What Does NTI have to do with headaches?
Teeth clenching or grinding causes jaw tension. Jaw tension triggers headaches; more specifically tension-headaches or migraines.
What is an NTI Guard?
An NTI Guard is a tension suppression system in the form of a dental mouth guard designed to:
- Treat teeth clenching, grinding, and jaw tension.
- Reduce excessive tooth wear and gum recession.
How does an NTI Guard prevent headaches?
By disallowing the teeth to clench together, it minimizes the high intensity contractions of the jaw muscles, thus reducing the source of pain for headaches. Once it is determined that a patient needs, or could benefit from an NTI guard, we take the necessary impressions and measurements to send to our dental lab which takes about 30 minutes. The lab requires about 2 weeks to fabricate the guard. Once we receive the guard we will deliver it to the patient and make any necessary adjustments.
How long does it take to see results?
Typically after a 2-4 week period of wearing the guard every night while sleeping, patients see a dramatic decrease of the frequencies and/or intensity of headaches.
How much does it cost?
Without insurance coverage these guards typically cost about $600, however insurance will typically cover 50% if coverage is present. This fee is minimal compared to orthodontics, headache specialist’s fees, and other migraine treatment options. It also allows the patient to stay off meds for their migraines.
